What is a trigger finger ?
A condition that causes the finger or thumb to suddenly snap or lock when bent.
It is caused by inflammation and swelling of the tendon or tendon sheath that surround the tendon in the finger.
What are the symptoms?
May notice painless clicking with movement of the affected finger at the beginning.
It can progress to painful catching or popping sensation when attempting to move the affected finger.
Sometimes, the affected finger may become ‘locked’ in a bent position, requiring the other hand to help straighten the finger.
Self-help strategies for easing trigger finger pain
- Ice cube massage over the affected finger (usually at the base of the finger where the swelling of tendon sheath often occurs)
- Simple tendon gliding moves (perform the following moves for ~10 repetitions, 2-3 times a day)
- Move #1 “Palm Spreading”
- Move #2 “Beak Hand”
- Move #3 “Fingers Hook”
